If you use a Windows PC and want to block individual websites, this works via an entry in the hosts file in the system. This entry acts as a website blocker and blocks the page you have selected on the entire computer - no matter which browser you are currently using. We explain below where you can find this file and how you block a page.

How to block websites in Windows

Follow our step-by-step instructions or take a look at the brief instructions ..

1st step:

Click the Windows button ⊞ in the lower left and enter " editor ". Windows will automatically find the right program. Right click on the entry and select "Run as administrator ". Enter your user data.

2nd step:

Then navigate to " Open " via " File ". Alternatively, the key combination [Ctrl] + [O] also works.

3rd step:

You must now call up the path " C: \ Windows \ System32 \ drivers \ etc ", in which the hosts file is located. Either click your way to the destination path or copy the path directly into the field. To ensure that files are also found, switch from "Text files only" to " All files ". Open " hosts " with a double click.

4th step:

You will now see the standard hosts file with no entries. To add an entry, you have to enter the address of the localhost (i.e. your PC) and the page to be blocked. The address is always 127.0.0.1. For example, if you want to block facebook.com, enter the following entry: 127.0.0.1 www.facebook.com. Attention: There is a space between the address and the URL. Save the file with [Ctrl] + [S] .

5th step:

To check whether the blocking of the website works, open a browser of your choice and enter the URL of the blocked website. As you can see in the screenshot, we can no longer access facebook.com. If you want to undo the blocking, you can simply delete the entry in the host file.

quick start Guide

  1. Open the editor or a text program of your choice as administrator.
  2. Go to the file explorer via " File "> " Open ".
  3. Then navigate to the path " C: \ Windows \ System32 \ drivers \ etc ".
  4. Instead of choosing Text Files > All Files , you can see the hosts file.
  5. Open this and enter a new entry for blocking in the form: "127.0.0.1 www.blockiertereite.de".
  6. Save the document and check in the browser of your choice that the page is blocked successfully.
