You can save files in Google Drive. For example, you can save documents or photos and access them from anywhere. You actually need an Internet connection for the cloud service - but you can continue to use Google Drive offline if the connection to the Internet is lost or unstable. You can find out how to enable offline access in this article.

Note: The purpose of this function is that you can continue working on documents even if you suddenly no longer have an Internet connection. Therefore, files can only be downloaded for one session and made available offline, not permanently.

Use OneDrive offline in the browser

You need the Google Chrome browser for this. The offline function of Google Drive is not available in other browsers. Sign in to Chrome with your Google Account . To do this, go to the little man in the top right corner. Then choose or add your account and log in. You can find out how to create a Google Account here.

Open the Google Drive webpage in Chrome, click the gear icon in the top right corner, then click Settings .

In the " General " section, activate the function under " Offline " by ticking the box. Confirm by clicking on " Done " at the top right. Files that you recently used in Google Docs, Google Sheets or Google Slides are now always automatically saved locally on your device. This means that you can continue to edit these files offline.

You can also specifically save individual files for offline use. To do this, right-click on the file and activate the switch for " Available offline ". The file is then automatically saved locally on your device so that you can work on it without the Internet. You can see from the tick symbol that a file is available offline.

Warning: You can only open and edit the files offline as long as you have Google Drive open. As soon as you close the program, you will need an Internet connection again to make the files available offline again.

Use OneDrive offline in the app

In the app, you can only save files individually for offline use. To do this, proceed as follows:

Open the Drive app and tap the three dots next to the file .

Go to " Make available offline " in the menu . The process ends after a short loading time. The file can now also be used without the Internet.
