Type of Error

Failed to start the vCenter service with the following text:

" Windows could not start VMware VirtualCenter Server on Local Computer. For more information, check the system event log. If this is not a Microsoft service, contact the service provider and refer to the error code specific to Service 2. "

If the Windows server of your vCenter is in English, the message would be the following:

" Windows could not start the VMware VirtualCenter Server on Local Computer, For mor information, review the System Event Log. If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor, and refer to service-specific error code 2. "

Causing and Resolution

If we review the System event viewer we see an error event with " ID 7024" Service Control Manager with the following text:

" The VMware VirtualCenter Server service closed with the service specific error. The system can not find the specified file . "

Although the description of the error is not very detailed that we say, the error is caused by a conflict with the services of " Internet Information Server (IIS)" of the vCenter server itself.
The " Internet Information Server" conflicts with the Apache Web server, which creates a dependency with the vCenter Server service .

It is possible that instead of being an " Internet Information Server" service it is any other web server that uses port 80 and / or 443 coming into conflict with the same Apache ports.

In this case we must uninstall the services of " Internet Information Server" or the Web server (not the Apache).

The situation can be given that we have added a feature in the Windows server and that we do not have the possibility to uninstall the services of " Internet Information Server" but there are services that prevent the Apache services from starting or working correctly.

In that case, it would be enough to stop and disable the following services:
  • Administration service " Internet Information Server" (IIS Admin Server)
  • World Wide Web Publishing Service (World Wide Publishing)

With this we would be solving the error of starting the VCENTER Service. Following the detailed steps we can recover our administration console again.
