Such providers offer their service for free, but are known to collect data. If you already have an alternative such as OwnCloud, NextCloud or Baikal, use CardDAV to synchronize your virtual address book. How to synchronize your contacts in Thunderbird with the add-on CardBook

In order to be able to use and edit your contacts in Thunderbird, you need the appropriate add-on "CardBook". Unfortunately, Thunderbird does not support the CardDAV standard by default. In our step-by-step instructions you will learn how to install and use the CardBook anyway to import your address book from other services. 1st step:

Start Thunderbird and click on the three-line menu ( ) in the upper right corner. Under "Add-ons " click again on " Add-ons" .

Now enter " CardBook " in the search field.

Next to the add-on, click "Add to Thunderbird ".

Confirm the addition and then click on " Restart now ".

Now switch to the CardBook tab at the top .

Click on the three-line menu at the top left and select " Address Book " and " New Address Book ".

If you want to synchronize a CardDAV file from services such as Nextcloud or if it is online, select " In the network " here. Otherwise you can also import a file from your PC via " local ". Click " Next " to continue.

You now have to enter the URL of your CardDAV address book in the corresponding field. Then enter your username and password . First click on " Check " so that CardBook compares your data. If this information is correct, click on " Next " again.

Give your address book a name, adjust the color if necessary and click " Next " again.

With a click on " Finish " your address book will be imported and your contacts will be synchronized with Thunderbird. Your contacts will now be displayed under " All address books ".

quick start Guide

  1. Start Thunderbird and open it via the three-line menu > " Add-ons "> " Add-ons ".
  2. Search for " CardBook " and install the add-on. Restart Firefox when prompted.
  3. Then you have to open the cardbook tab via the menu bar. To do this, simply click on the relevant entry.
  4. Now click on the three-line menu on the left and select " Address Book "> " New Address Book ".
  5. Select " On the network " or " Local " depending on where you want to import the contacts from. Then click on " Next ".
  6. You now have to enter the URL of your CardDAV address book , your user name and your password .
  7. With a click on " Check " the data will be compared and you can continue with " Next ".
  8. Now you can rename your address book and customize the color. With " Next r" you go to the last step.
  9. So that the synchronization works successfully, click on " Finish ". Your CardDAV address book will then be imported and you can use the contacts in Thunderbird.
