You have friends over and want to let them use your WiFi. To do this, you have to look for the password or read it off the router and your friends have to copy it down - typos are inevitable. But it is also easier and faster if you have an Android smartphone that uses at least Android 10 (also called Android Q). In this article, you can find out how you can use it to share your WiFi easily via QR code.

Note: Some smartphone manufacturers have integrated a function for WiFi sharing into their devices for a long time. So it can be worth taking a look at your mobile phone settings even if you are not yet using Android 10.

A QR code will now appear on your screen . To connect to your WiFi, your friends have to scan the code with their smartphone and confirm the registration . Then the device automatically logs into the WLAN. This works regardless of which operating system the other device is using.

Alternatively: share WiFi via app

If your smartphone uses an operating system older than Android 10 and does not have its own WiFi sharing function, you can also share your password via the app. Google offers the "Google Wifi" app for this purpose. This allows you to share your WiFi password, for example via email or SMS, and also gives you more control over your network. For example, you can use the app to reserve bandwidth for individual devices, deactivate WiFi for other devices entirely or set up your own guest network. Here you can find the Google Wifi app for Android devices. You can find out here how to create a QR code for WiFi using a website.

Quick guide: Share WiFi in Android

  1. Go to the settings of your smartphone (gear symbol).

  4. At the bottom left go to " QR code " (also "Share", QR code symbol).
  5. Your smartphone now shows a QR code. If you scan this code with your mobile phone and confirm the registration , your device will automatically log into the WLAN - regardless of which operating system the other device is using.
