HBO GO is a streaming service for movies and series similar to Netflix, although slightly more expensive (12.99 per month for two simultaneous devices), with less content and with some technical flaws that, at least for its Android app, has earned it a reputation of 2.7 / 5 in the Play Store..
I subscribed for about two months to the service, particularly for my interest in watching Game of Thrones, since it is the only platform in Latin America that transmits it. But beyond the content, here I will focus on the applications of the service and how it works, things that I have managed to solve and others that have been impossible.
Delete the «Adults» menu
To remove the "Adults" section from the main menu, you must activate parental control in your HBO GO account. You can do this from the mobile app settings or from the web version of HBO GO . Just uncheck the "R" (adult content) box and save your changes. Thus the option "Adults" will disappear from the side menu..
The downside of doing this is that you must set up a PIN, which you must enter every time you want to watch other adult content on HBO GO, such as Game of Thrones and any movies or series with objectionable content. In any case, this can be regulated with the other parental control options. The "PG" option will allow you to view content for those over 13 and "G" content for "All audiences" without entering a PIN. In both cases, any content outside of these categories does not disappear from your account like the adult section. It will continue to be visible but in order to see it, the PIN must be entered.

Fortunately, the latest version of the HBO GO application for Android already allows streaming to Chromecast or Android TV (which could not be said for old versions of the app, where the button generally did not appear). However, this will not do you much good if you have an Amazon Fire Stick TV, which apparently does not support this technology ( unless you use AirScreen , although it is not the same)..

In the case of these devices, you must install the APK of HBO GO for Android TV. It is likely that these devices already have the HBO GO application in their application catalog but surely when you open it you will see the error "Not available in your region" or something similar. This is because that pre-installed application is usually the United States version and you will not be able to use it if you are in Latin America ( unless you use a VPN ).
Entonces, el truco es desinstalar esa versión de USA de HBO GO e instalar el APK de HBO GO Android TV para Latinoamérica. En el caso del Amazon Fire TV Stick se puede hacer desde aplicación «Downloader» que puedes descargar desde su misma tienda de apps. Seleccionas la ficha «Browser» y allí deberás buscar en Google el APK Android TV de HBO GO para Latinoamérica que puedes encontrar en el sitio APK Mirror.
Una vez descargado el APK tendrás que activar las «Apps de orígen desconocido» en el aparato para que permita la instalación.

HBO GO se para o corta a cada rato
Desde mi experiencia, HBO GO necesita de una conexión a Internet óptima para funcionar bien. Si hay algún inconveniente con ella empieza a atrancarse. Esta situación la tenía debido a mi inestable conexión a Internet. Una vez optimizada, instalando un nuevo router , el problema desapareció. Sin embargo, debo admitir que esto solo me pasaba con HBO GO, porque a pesar de mi router anterior, Netflix funcionaba bien.
No guarda idioma y subtítulos para todos los capítulos
Este es un problema para el que no he hallado solución. Es necesario cambiar a idioma español y desactivar los subtítulos en cada capítulo de una serie. El cambio no se mantenía como sucede con Netflix o Amazon Prime.
Otros
- Otro problema que tenía con HBO GO es que en ocasiones no se guardaba el último capítulo visto o hasta donde lo había visto cuando la conexión se perdía. Me tocaba irlo a buscar en el catálogo y buscar la parte en la que me quedé.
- También está el tema de los tokens. Al siguiente día generalmente siempre veía el aviso «El token está vencido». En este caso solo había que reiniciar la app (Forzar detención manteniendo presionado sobre su icono, opción «Información»).
Conclusión
El catálogo de HBO GO no es tan grande como el de Netflix o Amazon Prime, errores en el software como no guardar los cambios de idioma en las series, manejo de tokens que arruinan la experiencia, una falta de optimización para funcionar aceptablemente en conexiones «lentas» y no guardar los cambios de visualizaciones pendientes son problemas en esta plataforma por los que no lo recomendaría como servicio de streaming principal. Quizás como una segunda opción, especialmente si no has visto Game of Thrones. Algo que he visto interesante de ella es alguna que otra película relativamente reciente, lanzada hace unos cuantos meses atrás solamente. Esperemos que todos sus problemas técnicos en las apps no sean heredados por el nuevo servicio que está por llegar, HBO Max.
