Although in Windows 11 the taskbar is placed at the bottom of the screen by default, many users prefer to place it at the top, or even on the left or right. Windows 11 doesn't offer a menu option for moving the taskbar to another location, but you can move it to any edge of the screen with a simple change in the registry.

How to move the taskbar in Windows 11

Follow our step-by-step instructions or take a look at the quick start guide .

1st step:

image
First open the registry. You can get there by opening the " Run " menu with the key combination [Windows] + [R] , entering the term regedit and pressing [Enter] .

2nd step:

image
Now navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ StuckRects3 . Open the key " Settings " with a double click to edit it.

3rd step:

image
Now change the fifth value in the second line from " 03 " to any of the following values: 00: The taskbar is on the left side of the screen. 01: The taskbar is at the top of the screen. 02: The taskbar is on the right side of the screen. 03: The taskbar is at the bottom of the screen. Then click " OK " to save the changes. If you use multiple monitors and want the taskbars on these screens to appear in the desired positions, you should change the same values for all registry keys in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ MMStuckRects3 folder . If you don't have multiple monitors, this folder doesn't exist.

4th step:

image
Now start the command prompt in administrator mode by searching for cmd in the Windows search, right-clicking on the result and selecting "Run as administrator ".

5th step:

Then stop and restart the explorer.exe process by typing taskkill / f / in explorer.exe and pressing Enter , followed by start explorer.exe .

6th step:

Your taskbar should now be visible at the desired edge of the Windows 11 desktop. Please note, however, that this movement of the taskbar is not supported by Microsoft and is therefore associated with minor errors. If you move the taskbar, the Start menu will move too, but it will still align with the lower left corner.
