Don't panic if your iPhone screen stays black or freezes. If your iPhone hasn't been dropped or damaged by water, you can usually use a few tricks to solve the problem yourself. We'll show you several things you can try before you need to turn on Apple Support:
Option 1: iPhone battery is deeply discharged
A completely discharged battery is a common cause of the screen staying black. The battery is often no longer particularly powerful, especially with older or heavily used devices. The battery may be so empty that it doesn't even have enough charge to indicate that the device needs to be connected to the mains. So first connect your iPhone to the mains using the original Apple charging cable and wait about 10 minutes . Then try turning on the iPhone again. If it still does not respond, try a different cable and power plug first . These can also be defective and prevent the battery from being charged..
Option 2: Force restart the device
If the iPhone is frozen, then forcibly restarting the device can possibly clear the problem. The restart is carried out on the iPhone by pressing various buttons . These combinations differ depending on the iPhone model :
iPhone 11 and newer, X, iPhone 8 or iPhone 8 Plus:
- Briefly press the volume up key and then briefly press the volume down key. Then press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears on the screen.
iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus:
- Press and hold the Standy and Volume down buttons at the same time for at least 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears on the screen.
iPhone 6s or older models:
- Press and hold the Standby and Home buttons at the same time for at least 10 seconds until you see the Apple logo.
If everything goes smoothly, your iPhone should now be back to normal.
But if it gets stuck during the startup process and still shows the Apple logo or just a red or blue screen even after a few minutes , you can try this tip:
Option 3: Put the device into the maintenance state and restore it with iTunes
Be sure to connect your iPhone to a computer with a USB cable first . Then force a restart of the device as described here . Note, however, that you must not let go of the buttons when the Apple logo is displayed. Hold the buttons down until the maintenance status screen appears. If a restore or update is possible, this will be indicated in iTunes. First select the update . This will reinstall iOS, but it won't erase your data. When restoring however, all data is removed from the iPhone. In this case, you hopefully have an up-to-date backup that you can play on the iPhone later. Here we will show you how to create a backup on your iPhone.
Option 4: If the screen remains black: Contact or go to Apple Support
None of the tips could help you get your iPhone going again? Then the only thing left to do is go to an Apple Store or contact Apple support via chat or phone ..
