There is the option of double-securing your Google account. With two-factor authentication, in addition to the password, you will also be asked for a security code, which you will receive via SMS, phone call or in the app ( Google Authenticator ). This means that your Google Account cannot be used even if your password has been discovered by hackers.

1st step:

Open the Google page in your browser : two-step verification . If you are not yet logged in, do so now. Then click on " Start Now ". Alternatively, you can open Google in your browser and go to " My Account "> " Registration & Security "> " Password & Registration Process "> " Confirmation in Two Steps ".

2nd step:

You now have to enter your telephone number so that the verification code can be sent. In addition, select whether you would like to receive the code by SMS or phone call . Then click on " Next ".

3rd step:

You have now received the code by SMS or phone call . Enter this in the field and thereby confirm your telephone number. Then click on " Next ".

4th step:

To finally complete the two-factor authentication , click here on " Activate ".

You will then be shown when the activation was completed. There is also the button to deactivate it . Additionally, you can add the prompt from Google . You don't have to enter a verification code every time, you can simply tap " Yes " on your smartphone to log in. Another convenient way to get the code for two-factor authentication is via the Authenticator app:

1st step:

Download the Google Authenticator app from the Google Playstore or the Apple App Store and allow access to your camera.

Open the app on your smartphone and tap on " Start ".

You can now choose whether you want to scan a barcode or enter a key . In our example we choose the barcode. If the scanning of the barcode does not work, go back to this page, tap on " Enter key " and continue with step 6 .

4th step:

Switch from your smartphone to your computer . Open the two-step confirmation page for your Google account that you activated beforehand ( see instructions above ). Scroll down a little further to find the replacement options . The authenticator app is also listed here. Click on " Setup ".

5th step:

Select the smartphone on which you have installed the app and click on " Next ".

Now take your smartphone back to hand and use the app to scan the barcode that appears in the browser. After scanning, click " Next ". If scanning the barcode doesn't work, tap " You can't scan it ". You will now be presented with a key (made up of letters) that you can enter into the authenticator app to continue with the next step.

7th step:

After your smartphone has scanned the barcode , a number code will appear in the app and you can add your Google account . To do this, tap on " Add Account ".

8th step:

Your Google account has now been added to the Authenticator app and shows you the authentication code . This changes every minute for security reasons.

Now you can enter the code displayed in the app in the appropriate field back on your computer . Then click on " Confirm ".

10th step:

This window appears if the code has been entered correctly. Click on " Done " and use the app for two-factor authentication from now on .

  1. To set up two-factor authentication, visit this page: https://myaccount.google.com/signinoptions/two-step-verification/enroll-welcome . Sign in and click " Start Now ". Alternatively, open Google in your browser and click on " My Account "> " Registration & Security "> " Password & Registration Process "> " Two-Step Confirmation ".
  2. Now enter your phone number and choose whether you want to receive the code via SMS or phone call . Then click on " Next ".
  3. Enter the code you received by SMS or phone call into the field and click on " Next ".
  4. Finally, confirm the two-factor authentication with " Activate ".

Quick guide: Code via the Google Authenticator app

  1. Download the Google Authenticator App from the Google PlayStore or the Apple App Store .
  2. Allow camera access , open the Google Authenticator app and tap " Start ".
  3. Select " Scan Barcode ". If the scan does not work, tap on " Enter key " and continue with step 6 .
  4. Change at the computer to the " two-step verification " web page of your Google Account and scroll down a bit to the " Replacement Options ". In the Authenticator app, click on " Setup ".
  5. Select your smartphone type and click " Next ".
  6. Take your smartphone again and use the app to scan the barcode in the browser window. After scanning, click " Next ".
  7. If the scanning doesn't work, tap " You can't scan it " and then " Next ". You will now see a key , enter it in the Authenticator app .
  8. A number code will now appear in the app . Tap " Add Account" to add it to the app permanently.
  9. Back at the computer , you can now enter the number code from the app into the browser window . Click on " Confirm ".
  10. If the code is correct, a window with " Done " appears. Click on it and the app setup for authentication is complete.
