You can use the SpeedFan program to control the ventilation of your Windows PC. The free software allows you to control the fans and also monitor the CPU fan. The tool also shows, for example, how hot the processor is or how fast the hard drives on your PC are. In addition to SpeedFan, there are other programs with similar functions. In this article you will learn about a selection. The prerequisite for controlling PC fans via software is always that your hardware also supports it.

Real alternatives

There are some programs that have the same or very similar functions as SpeedFan. We introduce you to a free and a paid tool.

Fan Control

With the free Fan Control software , you can monitor various PC fans and control their speed. This includes, for example, the fans of the CPU, graphics card and housing that are connected to the mainboard. The tool's user interface is appealing and adaptable to your needs. Thanks to the control function, Fan Control is a real alternative to SpeedFan. However, the current version of the software is only available in English on GitHub.

Note: Unfortunately, the Fan Control application file could not be executed in our test..

Argus monitor

This program enables you to monitor and control the fans of your PC. You can either set fixed speeds for the fans or control them depending on the temperature of individual components. The program uses the temperature values of the CPU, GPU, hard disk, RAM and mainboard. You can test Argus Monitor for 30 days free of charge, after which you can purchase a license for 1 year (currently 10.90 euros) or for 3 years (currently 22.90 euros).

Attention: When installing Argus Monitor, it can happen that adware is also installed, i.e. advertising software..

If your hardware supports this, you can also control the fans of your PC with Argus Monitor.

Monitoring only, no control

There are some programs with functions similar to SpeedFan, but they only allow the systems to be monitored, no controls. However, if the temperature of individual hardware parts is too high, you can usually conclude that something is wrong with the fan. In the following we present a small selection of monitoring tools for the PC:

Core Temp
The free program shows you the temperature of the CPU. Core Temp breaks down the values per processor core. You can also see the highest and lowest temperatures measured within a time interval.

Warning: Along with Core Temp, adware (advertising software) is installed on your PC by default. You can prevent this by unchecking " Additional icon recommendations " during the installation process.

Under "Temperature Readings", Core Temp shows you the current CPU temperature as well as maximum and minimum values.

HWMonitor You can
use this software to monitor the temperature of the PC hardware. In addition to the values of the CPU, you can also see the temperature and utilization of the graphics card and the temperature of the motherboard (if it has a sensor for it). The HWMonitor is also free of charge.

You will find the temperature values in the HWMonitor under "Temperature" for the respective hardware component.

GPU-Z
This tool, which is also free of charge, monitors your graphics card (GPU). In addition to the temperature, GPU-Z also shows you, for example, the utilization of the GPU and the speed of the fan.
