The Antolin website has been very popular for years to motivate schoolchildren to read books. Children can answer questions about books they have read and earn points with them. Read this tip about exactly what Antolin is, what the aim of the program is and how it works.

What is Antolin and what is the program for?

The website antolin.de is a program by Westermann Verlag, which aims to promote the reading skills of schoolchildren, especially from grades 1 to 10 . The aim is to motivate the children to read . The stimulus that the use of a computer has on children is used for this purpose. In addition to promoting reading, Antolin can also serve to build up knowledge of foreign languages , for example by asking English questions about English-language books.

Antolin now has a large database with more than 70,000 questions on a wide variety of books. There are also regular recommendations with books on specific topics as well as top 100 lists with the most frequently used titles to motivate children to continue reading.

The program costs € 44 per year for a class or € 196 for an entire school, library or similar educational institution. For a school board, Antolin costs € 109 per school and year. Unfortunately, private individuals cannot register on the website themselves.

In addition, there are two apps from Antolin that are intended to promote children's reading skills, for example through reading, guessing and search games. However, the quizzes on books are not included in the apps. The Antolin app for 1st and 2nd class is available here in the Google Play Store and in the Apple App Store . You can find the app for 3rd and 4th grade here in the Google Play Store and in the Apple App Store . The apps cost € 2.99 each..

How exactly does Antolin work?

In order for students to use Antolin, a teacher must first add them to a class. This function can then be used to monitor the children's progress in order to offer targeted help or to motivate them further, if necessary. For example, if students move to a secondary school, the account that has been created can be transferred so that the points collected are not lost.

Using Antolin is very easy for schoolchildren : They first receive individual access data with which they can log in to Antolin from home. Now you can read a book that they received from school or a library, for example. Then log in to Antolin using the credentials provided by your teacher. They answer ten to 16 multiple-choice quiz questions about a book , which can usually only be answered if the book has been read carefully. In order to really promote reading skills, it makes sense that the children have not opened the book at the same time.

If a question is answered correctly, it will be displayed immediately, and if an answer was wrong, the correct answer will be explained to the student. For every correctly answered question there are plus points and, in order to prevent arbitrary answers, minus points for incorrectly answered questions . The quizzes are each held in an appropriate language for the reading progress at which the book is usually read. In addition, however, there is the option of having German questions read aloud ..

The points that a student has collected or lost while answering are added together to form a total number of points . The teachers can use this to award class winners, for example, or distribute certificates in order to further increase motivation to read.

Types of quizzes at Antolin
So that the questions are adapted to the children's reading progress, there are three types of quizzes that can be answered: If a quiz has a blue cap , it contains ten to 15 questions and is suitable for most students . For children who have just started reading or who have reading difficulties, there are also quizzes with a green hat . These contain ten relatively easy-to-answer questions about a book. Finally there are quizzes with a red cap . These are aimed at advanced students and contain eleven to 16 questions that should stimulate thought. For example, the children can form their own opinion about the book.
