Unfortunately, the Apple mail app cannot be used to request read receipts when sending e-mails. However, this is still very easy with a small tool: You can find out here how you can receive read receipts for e-mails with the "Mailbutler" program.

How to enable read receipts in Apple Mail

As mentioned earlier, you need an external program to request read receipts in Apple Mail. "Mailbutler", which is free of charge when used occasionally, is ideal for this purpose. You can use the tool to request up to 20 read confirmations per month free of charge - for more you have to use one of the paid subscription models. Unfortunately, this does not work with the mail app on the iPhone or iPad.

Follow the step-by-step instructions or take a look at the quick start guide .

1st step

image
Open the website www.mailbutler.io and click on " Get Started " in the upper right corner .

2nd step

image
Enter your email address and name and, for private use, set the company size to " It's just me ". Select the Apple Mail symbol , assign a password and click on “ Signup for free trial ”.

3rd step

image
Mailbutler will now be downloaded as a program. Open your downloads and start the program.

4th step

image
In order to be able to use the program, you must first install the Mailbutler plug- in. To do this, click “ Install Now ” and enter your Mac password to confirm.

5th step

image
After the installation you can activate the plugin. To do this, open Apple Mail , click on " Mail " in the menu bar and then on " Settings ".

6th step

image
In the first tab " General " click on " Manage plug-ins ... "

7th step

image
Check Mailbutler.mailbundle ” and then click on “ Apply and restart mail ”. Then confirm with " Allow access ".

8th step

image
If Mail has been restarted, you will find an area of Mailbutler on the right-hand side. Log in here with the login data that you assigned in step 2.

9th step

image
If you now write a new e-mail, a tick symbol appears on the right in the subject line , with which you can set the e-mail tracking. If you click on it, two blue ticks appear - this enables tracking. If you click it again, the checkmarks will turn gray and tracking will be disabled. Compose your email and send it off as normal.

10th step

image
If you now open the e-mail in the “ Sent ” folder , you can see ticks in the subject line. This display works in a similar way to that in chat apps, e.g. WhatsApp: A gray tick shows you that the e-mail has not yet been opened . If you see two blue ticks , the recipient has opened the e-mail . You can also see the time at which the e-mail was opened.

Read receipts with Apple Mail on the iPhone - is that possible?

You cannot request a read receipt directly in the Apple Mail app on the iPhone. However, "Mailbutler" also offers an app in the App Store. You can also use this to send e-mails with read receipts on your iPhone or iPad.

Unfortunately, the app is not permanently free and not only limited in functionality, as is the case with the Mac program. After a 14-day trial period, you need to take out one of the subscriptions in order to continue using the app.

Follow the step-by-step instructions or take a look at the quick start guide ..

1st step

image
Download the “ Mailbutler ” app from the App Store and open it. Then tap on “ Register ”.

2nd step

image
Create an account with Mailbutler by entering an email address and a password .

3rd step

image
On the start page, tap the paper airplane symbol in the lower right corner to send a new email.

4th step

image
So that you can send a new e-mail, you must first enter your e-mail address . It works just like logging into a normal e-mail program: tap on one of the suggested e-mail providers if you have an account with them, or alternatively select " Another e-mail account ... ". Enter your e-mail address, your password and, depending on the provider, additional information to save the address.

5th step

image
Now you can specify a recipient and compose the email. Tap the tick symbol to activate or deactivate the read receipt. If the checkmarks are blue , the e-mail is being followed, if they are gray , you will not receive a confirmation. Then tap on “ Send ”.

6th step

image
On the start page you will now see an overview of all the e-mails that you have sent via Mailbutler. A gray tick indicates that the e-mail has not yet been opened. Two blue ticks means that the recipient has opened the mail. Tap on an email for more information.

7th step

image
In the detailed view of the e-mail you can also see when the e-mail was opened for the first time.
