When you surf the Internet, your computer is automatically assigned an IP address that enables the device to be uniquely identified. This is important so that all data actually reaches the right computer. You can find out what your own current IP address is. In macOS, you have the following options to determine your IP address:

Find out the IP address in the WLAN

If you are on WiFi with your Mac, you can easily find out the IP address:

Just hold down the [ALT] key while clicking the WiFi icon in the upper right corner . Your current IP address will then be displayed in the context menu.

For Mac OS, you can find your local IP address under "Network Settings".

Determine the IP address via the terminal

  1. Open the terminal . You can get there either via " Applications " - " Accessories " - " Terminal " or via the Spotlight search . The search can be called up using the key combination [cmd] + [space] .
  2. Enter the command " ifconfig " in the terminal and confirm with [ Enter ]. This command gives you an overview of your network configuration and all network interfaces.
  1. For a better overview, Sue can also use the command " ifconfig | grep" inet "| grep -v 127.0.0.1 " or " ifconfig en0 ". The two commands provide a stripped-down version that has been reduced to all relevant data.
  2.  Your IP address will then be displayed after the " inet " entry .

Alternatively, you can also have your IP address displayed on the terminal.

Determine the IP address via external services

Regardless of the operating system , you can also determine your IP address using online services . To do this, visit, for example, My IP address from heise online. When you click on the link, you will immediately see your IP address - but not the IP address of your computer, but that of the router. You can find other providers here: www.heise.de/tools/
