Use Windows Photo Viewer in Windows 10
How to restore it

If after upgrading to Windows 10 from Windows 7 or 8, you want to restore and use Photo Viewer, it's really quite easy to do so. We are going to see it with the information that they have provided us from  guiasdigitales.net . These are the steps to follow..

Use Windows Photo Viewer in Windows 10

The first thing we will have to do is open the operating system Settings. For this we can press the start menu and click on the gear icon. Additionally, we can press Windows + i. Once we have the Settings application open, we are going to go to the Applications section.

We will click on Default applications among the options that we will find in the left sidebar. Which will open a new page, the list of default system applications..

In the "Photo Viewer" section we will click to configure Windows Photo Viewer as the default application. In this way we can use it without problems. Although if Photo Viewer is not in the list by default, then we will have to restore it as we will discuss below.

How to restore it

It's a little more complicated for those people who booted into a clean install of Windows 10. While Windows Photo Viewer is still hidden in system code, we'll need to use the Registry Editor to activate it..

It is not necessary to open the Registry Editor, we can obtain a registry file by downloading it from this link. Microsoft didn't actually remove the app, it just "hidden" it by deleting it from the registry.

The file will modify the registry to tell Windows 10 to allow us to display Windows Photo Viewer. We recommend downloading the file to an easily accessible location like your desktop, for example.

Once the file is downloaded, we proceed to double click to execute it and we will have to follow the instructions and accept them. First we will see that a dialog box appears where it asks us if we want to make changes to the system, here we click on "Yes".

Then we will see a dialog box of the registry editor where it will ask us if we want to continue, we also click on “Yes”. And then we will see a message informing us that it was added to the registry correctly.

Now the system registry has been updated and Windows Photo Viewer has been unlocked. The only thing left to do are some modifications to be able to use the application. Unfortunately, it is not possible to use the app by default in the same way as users who upgraded.

We are going to have to go to the photo that we want to open and we are going to right click on it, in this menu we will have to choose “Open with”. We will see a new menu that expands with several default applications, we are going to select the option "Choose another application".

Once the new dialog box opens, we will have to scroll down and we will have to choose "More applications" to expand the menu of available apps. Here we can find Windows Photo Viewer.

If we always want to use this application to view photos and images, all we have to do is check the box next to "Always use this application to open files (extension)" and that's it.
