Windows Server 2008 offers two different options for installing an FTP server:
  • The FTP server can be installed through the graphical user interface.
  • Configure the server to function as a Server Core installation.
We now go to the installation of said Roles; Open the Server Manager and scroll through the panel to the right of the Function Summary section. Next, click on the link to add features found within this section. When doing so, Windows will start the Add Function Wizard.

Do "NEXT" for the wizard welcome screen, now take us to the Select server functions screen. Select the check box corresponding to "WEB SERVER (IIS)" and click on "NEXT". Now you will be taken to the Select Function Services screen of the wizard. This screen shows the various components related to IIS that can be installed. Since many of the services required by an FTP server are selected by default, go ahead and click "NEXT" to accept the default values. Now you will be taken to a confirmation screen that lists the decisions you have made.

Read correctly the components that will be installed, and then click on the Install button. When the installation process finishes, check that the installation was successful, and then click the "CLOSE" button .

Now, open the Server Manager and navigate through the Server Manager console tree:

// Classes / Web Server (IIS)

When selecting the " web server (IIS)" container, scroll through the panel on the right until you find the function services section. When you examine the entries in this section, you will notice that the FTP publishing service and its subcomponents are not installed.

You can install these components, click the link Add feature services. In doing so, Windows will open a dialog box that asks you to select the function services you want to install. Check the box corresponding to the FTP publishing service. In doing so, the subcomponent service of the FTP server and the FTP console management checkboxes will also be selected. Leave these items selected.

Click Next and Windows will display a summary screen that shows which feature services to install. Assuming the options appear to be correct, go ahead and click on the "INSTALL" button .

Windows will now install the selected function services. When the installation process finishes, then click on the "CLOSE" button .
