Recently I have encountered the need to
install Telegram on an Ubuntu desktop
and one does not know what instructions to follow, since there are different ways to install it. From unofficial PPA repositories and official packages, to snap packages.
In this little tutorial I will show how to install it from the official page quickly and easily.
We will only need to go to the terminal to launch a couple of commands.
The tutorial is aimed at Ubuntu, but it should work on most Linux distros.
How to install Telegram on Ubuntu desktop.
First of all we must know if our operating system is 32bits or 64bits, since depending on this we will have to choose the Telegram package that we will download.
If we are in a 64bit system, the command we will execute to download Telegram is:
sudo wget --trust-server-names https://telegram.org/dl/desktop/linux
If we are in a 32bit system the command will be:
sudo wget --trust-server-names https://telegram.org/dl/desktop/linux32
For those who wonder what the
--trust-server-names
option is, say that it is to save the file with the correct name, since there are several redirects.
Once the package for the architecture of our operating system is downloaded, we will have on the disk a
compressed file in .tar.xz format
, which we will have to decompress.
To unzip this file we execute the command
:
sudo tar -xvf tsetup.1.1.7.tar.xz
In my case the file had the name
tsetup.1.1.7.tar.xz
, but you will use the name of your file.
Now we will have a Telegram folder in which we will find the two binaries ready to execute:
-
Telegram
: binary desktop application for Linux.
-
Updater
: binary to update Telegram.
By double clicking on the Telegram binary we will have it ready to use.
Conclusions and final tips.
With this method to install Telegram, we do what would be a
portable installation
, so we can move the binaries to the folder that suits us. We can also
create a
shortcut to the application from the desktop for quick access.
To uninstall Telegram we would simply delete the folder with the binaries and voila.
I like this type of installation because it is clean and simple.
In some tutorials, packages are downloaded from the following URLs:
They are the same package that we have used in the tutorial, only that these URLs are shorter and easier to remember, you can use them without problem.
