Google Chrome: how to activate the improved spell checker

How to activate Google Chrome's enhanced spell checker

Google has an improved spell checker that can help you avoid typos when writing from the browser, whether it's your emails, work chats, or even your social media posts. Like most spell checkers, it is above all a writing aid and not a magic tool that will prevent you from all types of mistakes.

Google chrome

All browsers include a spell checker by default . Whether you use Google Chrome , Firefox, Safari, or even Microsoft Edge, spelling errors are underlined in red. By right clicking on misspelled words, you have a list of suggestions with the correct spelling in them.

For a while now, Google Chrome has offered a so-called improved corrector that works in exactly the same way, but has the particularity of offering better suggestions based on the same database as its search engine.

Google Chrome: how to activate the improved spell checker

The browsers' spell checkers are based on a dictionary of words which serves as a basis for comparison to check the correct syntax of the words entered by the Internet user. The improved spelling checker of Google Chrome is unique in that the word dictionary is the same as the one integrated in the Google search engine, but also in the applications of the Google office suite: Docs, Sheets, Slides and Forms.

The advantage is to be able to benefit from a constantly updated dictionary of words which contains some popular terms that are not found in classic dictionaries, even if in common use you may not notice a big difference.

To enable Google Chrome's enhanced spell checker:

  • Click on the three vertical dots at the top right of the browser then on  Settings
  • On the page that opens, click on  Advanced settings
  • In the privacy and security section , toggle the switch to activate the option "  Use a web service to correct spelling errors  ".

That's it that's all. Technically, when you enter words from the browser, the text is first sent to Google's servers. The typos or typos are then underlined and accompanied by more relevant suggestions when you right click. It is therefore important to know that all your entries are transmitted to the servers of the Mountain View firm.
