We're excited about Google's recent announcement about the next version of Android: specifically, the numbering it will have and its trade name. It is Android 6.0 Marshmallow (marshmallow) and, along with this announcement, the company has released the software for application developers (the final SDK 6.0 ) and factory images to install the latest "preview" of this version of Android ( Android M Preview 3 ) on Nexus devices..

From the hand of Google, the specifications and features that Android 6.0 Marshmallow will have are not yet known, but it is most likely that everything that has been seen in the three test versions (Previews) of this operating system, released under the temporary name Android M during these last months, they are also seen in Marshmallow.

Some Android M features that will almost certainly remain in Android 6 are:

  • Block application permissions.
  • Backup applications to Google Drive, as long as your data does not exceed 25MB.
  • Sleep mode that allows you to save battery, disabling the background activity of applications.
  • Fingerprint reader support, which programmers can possibly take advantage of to improve login and authorization in their applications.
  • Now on Tap, which will allow the user to obtain relevant and structured information from whatever screen they are on.

Do not expect any news in aesthetics or appearance: the update to Android 6.0 Marshmallow is more technical than visual. There are no major changes in the design, compared to Android 5 Lollipop ..

Only those who have a Nexus 5/6/9 / Player device will be able to download and install the latest Android M Preview 3 trial version right now, and they will probably be the first to receive the final Android Marshmallow 6.0 operating system as an OTA update between September and November of this 2015. The rest of users with other brands of devices with Android will have to wait for the decisions of their manufacturer and operator on this update.
