People who create and edit a movie in iMovie often want to add text to the video as well. This is very easy to do with Apple's editing program. No matter if opening credits, titles or credits - you can choose from a variety of different text elements that you can easily insert and adapt. We explain exactly how for iPhone and Mac in our tip.

How to insert text in iMovie on iPhone

Follow the step-by-step instructions or take a look at the quick start guide .

1st step:

image
Unfortunately, iMovie for iOS does not allow you to move text freely in the timeline, as you can in the version for the Mac. Instead, you always insert text directly into a specific video clip. So first tap on the clip in which you want the text to appear. Then tap on the " T " symbol at the bottom of the toolbar.

2nd step:

image
Here you will find a number of different titles that you can use as opening credits, credits or as a fade-in. Find one and tap on it to add it to the video. Incidentally, iMovie currently cannot show two titles at the same time.

3rd step:

image
Now you can first adjust the text. To do this, first tap on the title in the viewer and then select " Edit " in the context menu . Once you are happy with the text, tap Done on the keyboard .

4th step:

image
Next, customize the title to your liking. You can change the font with the " Aa " symbol . With the circle to the right of it you can set the color of the title. Tap on the three dots to open a menu with further options.

5th step:

image
Here you can first define the style . Unfortunately, iMovie does not allow you to determine the exact position of the text yourself. With the style you can at least determine whether the text is displayed in the middle or in the lower third of the film. Below you can activate a text shadow and set whether only uppercase letters or also lowercase letters should be used. At the bottom you can still specify whether the title should be used for the entire duration of the video clip should be displayed. If you deactivate this option, titles are about 3 seconds long and then fade out - even if the video clip continues to run. To exit the menu again, finally tap on the " X " symbol.

How to insert text in iMovie on Mac

Follow the step-by-step instructions or take a look at the quick start guide ..

1st step:

image
Switch to the " Title " tab in the upper left area . There you will find a number of different titles, for example opening and closing credits and overlays such as lower bands and subtitles. To get a more detailed picture of a title, you can hold the mouse on it for a longer period of time until a preview is displayed on the right in the viewer. Then move the mouse left and right to scan the title. Tip: You cannot adjust the position of the text on the video later. You should therefore directly select a title that is arranged in the desired position.

2nd step:

image
Once you have selected a title that you want to insert, drag it with the mouse to the desired position in the timeline at the bottom. As with a normal video clip, you can then adjust the length and position of the title again. Note: Unfortunately, you cannot currently display two titles in iMovie at the same time. If you drag a second title over an existing one, the old one will be shortened or deleted.

3rd step:

image
You can then design the title as you wish. To do this, move the mouse to a point in the video where the title can be seen . Then click on the " T " symbol in the toolbar above the viewer .

4th step:

image
Now you can first adjust the text of the title . This works directly via the viewer and exactly as you know it from other programs: highlight words or simply click where you want and enter text there.

5th step:

image
You can then adjust the design of the title. Please note that all changes are only made for the part of the title that is marked in the viewer. If necessary, first select the entire text. Now you can use the menu bar, which is above the viewer font Select and the font size to customize. To the right of this you will find setting options for aligning the text as well as for bold or italic printing . With the third symbol next to "Bold" and "Italic" you can create an outline enable or disable for the text. A click on the colored box opens a window with which you can customize the color of the text according to your wishes. If you are satisfied with the design, click on the blue tick on the far right.
