How to easily export a movie from iMovie on iPhone and Mac, see this guide..

The free iMovie program from Apple has long been the go-to editing program on the iPhone or Mac, especially for beginners. Whether you are cutting a video about your trip, a birthday party or your pet, in order to be able to watch the film on other devices, you have to export it at the end. The procedure for doing this differs slightly between the iMovie versions for iPhone and Mac, but it is very simple in both cases. In this guide you can read exactly how exactly you have to proceed in order to export films from iMovie and what you should pay attention to.

Export iMovie movies on iPhone

Follow the step-by-step instructions or take a look at the quick start guide .

1st step:

image
If you are satisfied with the editing of your film, tap on " Done " in the upper left corner . This will leave the edit mode and your project will be cached.

2nd step:

image
Then go to the share icon below .

3rd step:

image
The best thing to do is to pull the menu for sharing the video upwards to see all the options. Then tap on " Options " at the top .

4th step:

image
Here you can now define some settings for the export. Use the “ Video ” option as “ Type ” so that you can also play the film on other devices. Below, select the resolution with which the video should be exported. Normally, " 1080p HD " is the best choice to get a sufficiently sharp video without taking up too much storage space. For newer iPhones, you can also choose below whether the video should be exported with HDR . Once you have made the desired settings, tap on " Done " at the top .

5th step:

image
Now you can choose where to save the exported movie file. If you want to save the video directly to your photo library , tap on "Save video ". Alternatively, you can tap on “ Save to files ” and choose your own storage location, or you can share the film above directly via AirDrop or with an app .

6th step:

image
Then the video is exported. Depending on the length and the selected resolution, this may take a while. Do not exit the iMovie app during this time, otherwise the export will abort. It is also best to connect your iPhone to a power cable during this time - exporting uses a relatively large amount of battery. The final MP4 file can then be found in the selected storage location.

Export iMovie movies on Mac

Follow the step-by-step instructions or take a look at the quick start guide ..

1st step:

image
Open the project you want to export in iMovie. If you are satisfied with the processing, click on the share symbol in the upper right corner . This will bring up a menu with various export options. Select " Export file " here.

2nd step:

image
Now you can define some settings for your video: In the top field you first define the name for the later film file. You can also specify a description below this. In addition to “ Attributes ”, you can also add tags to the video so that you can quickly find the file later.

3rd step:

image
In the Format field, select Video And Audio .

4th step:

image
Next to " Resolution " select the resolution with which your film should be exported. The higher the resolution, the sharper the picture will be in the end. At the same time, however, the file also takes up more storage space. Typically, therefore, the 1080p option is a good compromise between quality and file size. You can see how big the file will probably be in the end, under the video preview on the left.

5th step:

image
Under " Quality " you can determine how high the quality of the video should be. This applies particularly to the colors - with a higher quality, a higher contrast can be displayed, which means that very dark or light areas can still be easily recognized. But here, too, the following applies: the higher the quality, the ultimately larger the file. We therefore recommend the " Medium " or " High " options for most cases .

6th step:

image
Finally, you can adjust the compression. " Faster " offers shorter export times and the resulting file can be played back more easily. We recommend this option for most cases. On the other hand, you can select “ Better Quality ” if you want to get the best possible quality for your film. Click on " Next ... " when you have made all the settings according to your requirements.

7th step:

image
Choose a location for the video, then click Save .

8th step:

image
You can follow the progress of the export using the circle in the upper right corner. If you click on it, you will receive more detailed information on the current status. This process can take some time, depending on the length and the selected resolution and quality. In the meantime, leave iMovie open and your Mac ideally connected to the charging cable. Once the movie has been completely exported, it is saved as an MP4 file in the selected storage location.

Quick start guide: iPhone

  1. When you're happy with your project, tap Done in the top left .
  2. Then go to the share icon below .
  3. In the share menu, tap on " Options " at the top .
  4. Select the “ Video ” option under “ Type ” and specify the desired resolution below it. With newer iPhones, you can also enable or disable HDR . To apply the settings, tap on " Done " in the upper right corner .
  5. Choose where to save or share the movie. " Save video " saves the film file in your photo library, with " Save to files " you can select an individual storage location. Alternatively, you can use a specific app or AirDrop for sharing.
  6. If you have selected an export option, the export will start. During this time, stay in the iMovie app so that the export does not abort. The video file is then saved or shared as an .mp4 at the storage location.

Quick start guide: Mac

  1. When you are finished with your movie, click on the share icon in the upper right corner and select " Export file ".
  2. Define a name , a description and, if necessary, attributes for your video. Determine the resolution and quality and determine whether the encoding should be faster or have a higher quality. Then click on “ Next ... ”.
  3. Determine a storage location and then click on " Save ".
