Open the project you want to export in iMovie. If you are satisfied with the processing, click on the share symbol in the upper right corner . This will bring up a menu with various export options. Select " Export file " here.

Now you can define some settings for your video: In the top field you first define the name for the later film file. You can also specify a description below this. In addition to “ Attributes ”, you can also add tags to the video so that you can quickly find the file later.

Next to " Resolution " select the resolution with which your film should be exported. The higher the resolution, the sharper the picture will be in the end. At the same time, however, the file also takes up more storage space. Typically, therefore, the 1080p option is a good compromise between quality and file size. You can see how big the file will probably be in the end, under the video preview on the left.

5th step:

Under " Quality " you can determine how high the quality of the video should be. This applies particularly to the colors - with a higher quality, a higher contrast can be displayed, which means that very dark or light areas can still be easily recognized. But here, too, the following applies: the higher the quality, the ultimately larger the file. We therefore recommend the " Medium " or " High " options for most cases .

6th step:

Finally, you can adjust the compression. " Faster " offers shorter export times and the resulting file can be played back more easily. We recommend this option for most cases. On the other hand, you can select “ Better Quality ” if you want to get the best possible quality for your film. Click on " Next ... " when you have made all the settings according to your requirements.

7th step:

Choose a location for the video, then click Save .

8th step:

You can follow the progress of the export using the circle in the upper right corner. If you click on it, you will receive more detailed information on the current status. This process can take some time, depending on the length and the selected resolution and quality. In the meantime, leave iMovie open and your Mac ideally connected to the charging cable. Once the movie has been completely exported, it is saved as an MP4 file in the selected storage location.
