The instant messaging service WhatsApp is still very popular. Not only for writing text messages, but also for sending photos, videos and voice messages. All files end up in the smartphone's memory and can slow down the device or, in the worst case, prevent messages from being displayed in the app. This can be remedied quickly. WhatsApp offers its users different options for freeing up storage space. There are basically two approaches. When deleting file types selectively, you can choose to delete pictures, videos, voice messages, and / or text. However, if you delete all of your chat history, all messages and files will be deleted.

1st step

Open WhatsApp. On Android, you call up the menu via the three-point symbol . On the iPhone, go to "Settings" .

2nd step

Click here on the sub-item " Data and memory usage ".

3rd step

Then go to " Memory Usage ". You will then be shown a list of your chats.

Now select the chat that you want to delete files from. The chats are sorted so that the one that takes up the most space is at the top.

In this view, the individual file types are listed with their respective storage space consumption. Here you can see which files are taking up a lot of space. If you click on " Manage messages " , checkboxes will appear next to the file types. Here you can decide which file types should be deleted. For example, if you only want to remove the videos, all other ticks must be removed.

Then you can go to " Empty messages " and confirm the process with " Delete all messages ".

1. Open WhatsApp and go to settings .
2. Now select " Data and Storage Usage ".
3. Then go to " Memory Usage ". Your chats are displayed here, sorted by file size.
4. Pick a chat that you want to remove files from.
5. To be able to select individual file types, click on " Manage messages ". Put a check mark next to the file types you want to delete. Remove the check mark for files that should not be deleted.
6. With " Empty Messages " and then " Delete All Messages " you finally remove the selected data.
