With the Instagram story highlights, you can divide your archived stories into different categories and at the same time have the flexibility to choose which stories you want to display for profile visitors. With highlight covers you can spruce up your profile and make it more clear.

How to make a story highlight cover

Thanks to design apps like Canva ( Play Store / App Store ) it is really easy to create individual and appealing highlight covers. Follow our step-by-step instructions or take a look at the brief instructions .

1st step:

If you haven't already installed the app on your smartphone, download Canva. Then open the app on your smartphone. There you will see all the designs that you can create at the top. Open the category " Social Media " and then select " Instagram Story ".

2nd step:

You will then see a number of different templates for Instagram Stories. You can choose one of the templates and then customize it to your liking. In this example we show how to design a cover with a background color and an icon. So we're starting here with an empty template .

3rd step:

You can now choose a background color for your cover. To do this, tap on the plus symbol at the bottom left.

4th step:

Then select " Background " at the bottom of the screen . You can now choose one of the available backgrounds or use the color palette at the top to define your own color using a color code.

5th step:

Once you have chosen a background, you can add an icon, emojis or text. Tap the plus symbol in the lower left again and then open the " Items " category . You can now scroll here to discover all graphics or search for a specific symbol. When you find it, just tap it to paste it.

6th step:

You can then adjust the size and position of the symbol. At the bottom of the screen you will find further editing options, such as color or transparency. Here you can also remove the symbol again.

7th step:

If you are satisfied with your cover, save it. To do this, tap the symbol with the downward pointing arrow in the upper right corner .

8th step:

Then tap on " Save ".

How to add your cover to story highlights

If you have already created a story highlight and would like to add a cover picture later, start in the picture gallery at step 14 (quick guide, step 11). If you're just going to create a highlight, start with step 1. To do this, follow our step-by-step instructions or take a look at the brief instructions ..

1st step:

First you should activate the archiving of your stories so that you can add stories to your highlights even after 24 hours. If you have already done this, continue reading from step 7. So tap on your profile picture in the Instagram app to open your profile.

2nd step:

Then tap on the burger menu in the top right corner and then select " Settings ".

3rd step:

Here tap on " Privacy ".

4th step:

Then go to " Story ".

5th step:

Under " Save ", activate the option " Save story in archive ".

6th step:

Now you can add a story to your highlights. To do this, open your profile in the Instagram app and tap on the plus symbol under " Story Highlights ". Keep in mind that you need to post a story first before you can add it to your highlights. You can read more about Instagram Stories and how to post them in another post.

7th step:

Now select the desired story from your archive and then tap on " Next ".

8th step:

Then go to " Edit cover picture ".

9th step:

Then tap the icon at the bottom left.

10th step:

Now select the cover you created and then tap the arrow in the top right corner .

11th step:

Then tap on " Done ".

12th step:

Now give your story highlight a suitable name and then tap on " Done ".

13th step:

Your highlight can now be seen in your profile. If you want to edit the cover later or if you have already created a highlight for which you want to change the cover, tap on the highlight you want.

14th step:

Then go to the three-point menu below . Then select " Edit Highlight ".

15th step:

If you now tap on " Edit cover picture ", you can select a new picture for your highlight as from step 10 onwards.

Quick guide: Create a cover

1. Install the Canva app on your smartphone.
2. Then open the app and tap on " Social Media " at the top. Then select " Instagram Story " below .
3. Here you can choose a template or an empty cover .
4. Then tap the plus icon in the lower left.
5. You can now make various adjustments. For example, open " Background " at the bottom of the screen and select a desired background.
6. You can then add an icon, emoji, or text. To do this, tap the plus symbol at the bottom left again.
7. Then open the " Elements " category below and select an appropriate icon.
8. Then adjust the size and position of the icon.
9. When you're done with your cover, tap the down arrow in the top right corner .
10. Then tap on " Save ".

Quick guide: add cover to highlight

1. First you should activate the archiving of your stories so that you can add them to your highlights even after the 24 hours have expired.
2. On the Instagram app, tap your profile picture , then open the burger menu in the top right corner.
3. Then select " Settings " and tap " Privacy " and then " Story ".
4. Under " Save ", activate the option " Save story in archive ".
5. Now you can add a story to your highlights after you've posted it. To do this, open your profile and tap on the plus symbol under " Story highlights ".
6. Then select the story you want and tap " Next " in the top right corner.
7. Then tap on " Edit cover picture ".
8. Then go to the icon at the bottom left to open your gallery and select your cover here. Then tap the arrow in the top right corner and then tap " Done ".
9. Now define a suitable name for your highlight and tap on " Done ".
10. Your highlight can now be seen in your profile.
11. To edit the cover later , tap the highlight you want.
12. Then go to the three-point menu below .
13. Then select " Edit Highlight ".
14. If you now tap on " Edit cover picture ", you can proceed as from step 8.
