Since Windows 10, pictures can only be opened by default via the "Photos" display and additionally installed programs. Not everyone likes that. But there is still the option of using the old Windows photo viewer. We'll show you how to get them back on Windows 10.

Note: Viewing pictures using the old photo viewer is also possible under Windows 10. However, some functions, such as direct printing, are no longer available. In addition, it is possible that the old photo display cannot be retrieved at all with newer Windows 10 versions. In this case, you won't be able to set the display as the default, but the method below still gives you a small advantage: once you've been following this, you can right-click an image. With a click on " Open With " you can then select " Windows Photo Viewer ".

Restore Windows photo display via registry

To get back the old Windows photo display, you need administrator rights . So first find out whether you have any rights or contact an administrator. Then follow our step-by-step instructions , the quick start guide or the explanatory video ..

1st step:

Open the start menu. Here, type in regedit and right click on it. Select "Run as administrator " and enter your administrator data if necessary. Usually these are the same as your login data for the computer. Select " Yes " when a brief warning message appears.

2nd step:

In the registry menu, follow the path " HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE " -> " SOFTWARE " -> " Microsoft " -> " Windows Photo Viewer " -> " Capabilities" -> " FileAssociations ".

3rd step:

Now click with the right mouse button on the empty area. Then select under " New " the sub-item " String ".

4th step:

Enter .jpg here .

5th step:

Right click on your newly created file. Then select " Change ... ".

6th step:

Enter PhotoViewer.FileAssoc.Tiff in the input field for the value . Then click " OK ".

7th step:

Repeat steps 3-6. Instead of .jpg, enter the names .png , .jpeg , .gif and .bmp . However, keep the value PhotoViewer.FileAssoc.Tiff .

Now close the registry and open any picture on your computer. You will receive a display from which you will select " Windows Photo Viewer ". Then check the box next to " Always use this app to open [Image Format] files " and click " OK ". You need to do this last step once for each image format . After that, Windows Photo Viewer will automatically be set as the default program for these formats.

Select this and check the box below on " Always use this app to open [Image Format] files ". Then click OK . You have to carry out the last step once for each image format . The Windows photo viewer is then automatically saved as the standard program for these formats.
