You can insert the average symbol with the key combination [Alt] + [157] . As soon as you release the Alt key , the symbol appears. To do this, you have to enter the digits on the numeric keypad of your keyboard. If you don't have a number pad , you can alternatively add the character via the Word menu. To do this, switch to the " Insert " tab and click " More symbols ... " under " Symbol ".

2nd step:

Now click on the " Subset :" drop-down menu and select " Latin-1 (Supplement) " from the list to find the character more quickly. Select it and then click on the " Insert " button .
