It is normal to have several tabs in our browser open. In our case, we generally have a minimum of eight tabs open more often than we would like. In these cases, nothing better than configuring groups of tabs in Google Chrome , to save space and time..
Create tab groups in Google Chrome
The first thing we will have to do is right-click on a Google Chrome tab. Regardless of whether it is a blank tab or with a specific website.
Once the new menu is displayed, we will have to click on the "Add tab to the new group" option..
Next, we'll need to type the name for our new tab group in Chrome.
An interesting option is to add a color to this group of tabs. This way it will be easier to identify them in the future, when we have several groups created..
To add more tabs to this group, we simply have to go to a new tab and right-click on it. In the contextual menu, we will have to click on "Add tab to group". Alternatively, we can drag the tab to the group in question.
After creating our tab group, we can click the name of the group to minimize it and save space on the tab bar. Another option is to right click on the group name to edit or close it. We can also click and drag the group to relocate it among the other tabs and groups.
In case this process is a bit complex or even boring. There is a browser extension called Auto-Group Tabs that does everything for us. The extension takes care of automating the process of adding tabs to a group and learns from the websites we visit frequently to add them to groups automatically.
Remember that it is also possible to deactivate them on Android, Windows and Chromebook in case we do not want to continue using the groups.
The limitations of current tab groups
We cannot deny that tab groups can be extremely useful on various occasions. The problem is that there are several things that still cannot be done; Let's remember that it is a relatively new feature.
- It is not possible to pin tabs in a group to save space or keep them further to the left in the group. If we anchor a tab that is in a group, it is removed from it and becomes a normal tab.
- It is not possible to save a group of tabs to reopen all of them later. We will have to rely on extensions like OneTab to share and open a list of websites.
- When we close a group of tabs, we will have to reopen one by one and recreate the group. While it is possible to recover sites when it is closed unexpectedly, it does not work this way if we delete a group, even by accident.
- There are no keyboard shortcuts (keyboard shortcuts) for adding or managing tab groups, which is unfortunate considering they can be very useful.
In general terms, it is a good tool that perhaps needs a little more development time. Possibly in the future it will offer us a greater number of possibilities.
