Introduction:

Before putting us to the installation full, which is still conventional to the other operating systems, only in the choice of the version. Let's try to explain a little bit what it is and what differences it has with the Windows 2008 Server version.

Well, the issue is that Microsoft has wanted to take another step in the issue of software for servers and not be left behind. With this version of " WINDOWS 2008 SERVER CORE" we will have some advantages and some limitations.

For starters, we should know that Windows Server 2008 Server CORE is a minimal installation that consumes approximately 3 GB of disk space and less than 256 MB of memory .

In the Windows 2008 Server CORE version, we do not have available all the roles that are available in the GUI version. This version, Windows 2008 Server CORE, does not have a graphical interface. But it can improve security and server management by reducing the chances of being the victim of an unwanted attack. We will also have a limited number of services that can run in this version, so there will be less chance of compromising the server by an intruder.

Roles that the Windows 2008 Server CORE version can assume:
  • File server
  • Print server
  • Domain controller
  • DNS server
  • DHCP server
  • WINS server
Characteristics that it supports:
  • Cluster Server
  • The Unix subsystem
  • Windows Server Backup
  • Multipath Input / Output (I / O)
  • Removable storage management
  • Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption
  • Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP)
  • Single Instance Storage
  • Telnet client
Installation:

Now let's go to the installation of this Windows 2008 Server CORE operating system. We can follow the steps of the conventional installation, the only difference is when choosing the version to install.

When the installation finishes and the Windows 2008 Server CORE operating system starts up. We do LOGON in the same way as with the Windows 2008 Server version and now we see that it has no graphical environment, instead we have a command console .

From this moment we must carry out a series of tasks of configuration of the server, among them, to establish the password of the administrator that is the most important and main.

To perform this task we can do it well by pressing " CTRL + ALT + DELETE" and in the same way as we would in the Windows 2008 Server version. Or with the command:

"NET USER ADMINISTRATOR *********"

In another tutorial we will be able to explain more about commands of our Windows 2008 Server CORE.
On this server for those Administrators who do not leave the console on their side and want to build a CORE quite secure.
