You ask us a lot: How to change the PS5 hard drive? This one has 500 GB, which seems like a lot, but that stays in nothing little by taking advantage of all the benefits of PS5. Of course, changing the PS5 HHD is very easy and does not affect the warranty ...

Surely you are thinking of changing the PS5 hard drive if you are a member of PlayStation Plus and you download the free games monthly, you do not miss a DLC, you like to go looking for the little great jewels of the PlayStation Store and the Share button has you hooked. You can always delete the game installations you have already finished, the videos and screenshots and even the downloaded games to download them at another time, but we agree with you that it is a bit of a pain ... The best solution is to expand the storage capacity of your PS5, changing its hard disk .

Quiet, that although this may sound strong, changing the hard drive of our PS5 is very simple and does not affect the warranty in any way, since throughout the operation you do not have to access the "guts" of the console. Now we are going to explain step by step the process to change it. Ok it is very simple, but you should be careful, because although the operation does not void the warranty, if you break any component in the process, Sony will not take care of that repair. Just don't take it lightly. Now we are going to explain some things you should know.

Things you can't do

If it is your day you changed the PS3 hard drive, you will remember that the console had a very useful tool called "Backup" that allowed you to "clone" the hard drive of your PS3. After installing the new one, you only had to restore that copy to have the console as you had it before, but with more storage space. Unfortunately, this tool is not available on PS5 (at least for the moment), so you will lose everything you have on the hard drive that you cannot copy to a USB device. That includes all downloaded games and game installs. That is, you can restore your games, but after changing the PS5 hard drive, you will have to install everything again. Luckily, it seems that firmware update 2.50 could include this backup tool, which would allow us to connect an external hard drive to PS5 to backup our hard drive and restore it later.

Currently you cannot use an external hard drive as "expansion" of memory, since in external USB storage devices neither game installations, nor applications, nor downloaded games can be saved ... And most of the space is eaten downloads and installations. In fact, a complete game, type GTA V , already takes about 50 GB and the operating system almost 100 ... We very much doubt that firmware 2.50 changes this situation.

Important things before you start

You need to have several things on hand, including a Phillips screwdriver

(philips),  pulling finite. But perhaps most important is the new hard drive . PS5 comes standard with a 500GB SATA II at 5400 RPM, 9.5mm. A lot of eye: 9.5 mm. Those of 15 mm are not valid, which are the most common. You can replace this disc with another one of the same characteristics, but with more capacity. You can choose between 1 TB (double the original) or 2 TB. Prices range from 70 euros for 1 TB and 130 euros for 2 TB. You can find more expensive or cheaper hard drives, from many brands. There is no one especially recommended.

Although they will tell you that 7200 RPM hard drives are better, because they are faster, we warn you that they are not officially recognized by Sony and that higher speed could cause overheating. Although there are people who have installed them without problems, we, just in case, recommend you to follow the specifications of Sony. In addition, the console reading processes are adequate to the speed of the original disk, so that higher speed is hardly noticeable on PS5 .

In addition to the hard drive, you also need a USB memory of at least 1GB, which must be formatted in FAT 32, and a computer with Internet access to download the PS5 operating system.. This firmware is the one you will install on the new hard drive. Be careful, the update is not worth downloading, it has to be the initialization file. At www.playstation.com you will find all the info. It doesn't hurt that you have another USB storage system to back up your games. You can store them on the same USB as the operating system, if you have enough space. And without further ado, let's go with the steps ...

image

Step 1: backup the saved data

When you change the hard drive you will lose all the data you have on the current hard drive, since there is no way to transfer it from one to another. Of course, you can save your saved games, either to a USB device formatted in FAT or in the cloud, if you are a PlayStation Plus subscriber.

1. Upload to online storage

If you have configured the console to automatically save the games in the cloud, they will be safe on the PSN servers. You can do this manually, by going to [Management of saved application data]> [Data saved in system storage]. Select the data you want to save and choose [Upload games to online storage].

image

2. Copy to a USB device

You must connect the USB device to your PS5 and carry out the same operation as before, enter [Data saved in the system storage], select the games you want to copy and choose the option [Copy to USB storage device].

Automatic charging function

If you are a member of PlayStation Plus you can have your PS5 automatically save your games in the cloud. To activate this function you must have your PS5 configured as primary and activate [Connect to the Internet], in the Energy saving settings. Then go to System Settings and activate [Automatic downloads and uploads]> [Saved data and update files].

Step 2: Replace the hard drive

The first thing is that you have at hand the tools we have mentioned before:
• Compatible hard drive: SATA II at 5,400 RPM and 9.5 mm
• Philips screwdriver (Phillips)

1. Remove the lid

Position the console so that its front is facing you. Just slide the shiny part of the console's top shell with your hands. Look at the image. Do not force it, it goes out without problems. If you don't manage that position, you can put it on your side. Don't use any tools: it slides out.

2. Remove the screw

You will see on the bottom left a screw with the PlayStation symbols (Square, Triangle, Circle, X). Remove it with the screwdriver, without forcing or over-tightening it. If the screwdriver you are using “slips”, do not press: change it for a smaller one.

3. Take out the hard drive

Slide the hard drive, which is inside a case, towards you. Keep sliding until it comes out completely. Place your thumb on the protruding tab and don't force it. It comes out very easily, simply by sliding.

image

4. Remove the bracket

To remove the hard drive casing or bracket, unscrew the four screws on it. Do not overtighten as the screws are quite soft. If you see that the screwdriver does not fit well, replace it with another one. Do not remove the rubber stops from the holes.

5. Place the new HDD

Take out the hard drive by sliding and look at its position (the one you see in the photo): in the same position you must put the new drive (the connectors just opposite the tab that you pulled to take out the console boxes, for the clueless). Reassemble the bracket, carefully screwing in the four screws. Don't overtighten them.

image

6. Insert the new hard drive

Slide the hard drive bracket back into place and make sure it fits all the way. Then screw the screw back in with the PlayStation symbols. Finally, carefully slide out the shiny PS5 shell and you're done. Don't try to force it.

Step 3: install the new software

For the new disc to work, you must install the PS5 operating system, which you can download from the official PlayStation website .

1. Download the operating system

From your computer browser click on this link and choose DOWNLOAD NOW. A file called "PS5UPDATE.PUP" will be downloaded.
Eye. On the same website you will find a system update file, which would allow you to update the console if you did not have it connected to the internet. This file, once downloaded, is called the same, but it does not allow you to do a system initialization, which is exactly what you are going to do when inserting a totally new hard disk.

image

2. Copy the file

Insert a USB memory with at least 1 GB of available space on your computer and create a folder called PS5 inside. Inside that folder create another UPDATE call (always in capital letters). Copy the PS5UPDATE.PUP file that you have downloaded before, into that folder. Remove the USB stick from the computer.

image

3.Start PS5 Safe Mode

Insert the USB stick into your PS5 and connect a wired controller. Hold the PS5 power button down for about 7 seconds. The Safe Mode menu will appear. Select the seventh option, “Initialize PS5 (Reinstall System Software)” and follow the instructions until installation is complete. If the file is not recognized by the console, check that you have correctly spelled the names of the PS5 and UPDATE folders, in capital letters, and make sure that the USB memory is formatted in FAT 32.

image

4.Restore the games.

Once the installation is complete, you can save your games on the new hard drive again . We recommend that you log in to PSN (essential if you have saved your games in online storage) and then go to [Management of saved application data]. Select Data Saved in the Online Storage or Data saved in the USB Storage device, depending on the medium you used to make the backup. Of course, connect the USB device.

image

To end...

And everything is done. Unfortunately, it's your turn to redownload all games, patches, and DLCs and reinstall physical apps and games. You don't have to do it right now, either. Go doing it little by little, as you go to play.

As you already know, all your profile information, trophies, friends and purchases are associated with your PSN account, so as soon as you log in you will have everything synchronized again and, obviously, you will not have to pay again for the games you already bought .

And that's it, you can enjoy all the extra space, but don't be an accumulator and do hard disk cleaning from time to time. Surely of all that you have "lost" with this change of hard disk you only reinstall half ...
