Prioritize WiFi or Ethernet by default in macOS

Apple implements certain functionalities in macOS which aims to facilitate the general use of the system both at the level of applications and its own services. This dramatically simplifies every action that we use as macOS users on a daily basis..

In macOS Mojave, we have by default an action performed by the system in the way it connects to the network . We know that mostly macOS is present in portable computers so that the default network will be Wi-Fi, but some portable computers such as the MacBook Pro have an Ethernet port, which allows us to connect through this medium. Although this is somewhat integrated in macOS Mojave, for some configuration issue there is a possibility that we are not using the correct connection which will result in connectivity failures.

For this Apple has integrated the option to set the priority of the network we will use. This is useful since we know some differences between a Wi-Fi network or an Ethernet, for example, if we need to download large files it is ideal to connect over Ethernet while if we need to be in constant motion the Wi-Fi network will be useful. We mention some clues to know why sometimes one connection is better than another..

WiFi and Ethernet differences
If you doubt between which connection to put, we leave you some tips:
  • The WiFi connection is compromised in connection performance due to interference, distances or obstacles that you may encounter on your way. Depending on your distance to the router the signal quality will tend to decrease. In addition, physical objects such as walls or doors also impair the reception of waves.
  • The WiFi network is transmitted by channels and these have to be shared by the connectivity of for example neighbors or nearby users. Therefore, it is important to manage a channel where saturation is lower.
  • The Ethernet cable is more aesthetically tedious but does not support those losses mentioned above thus giving a better quality signal of up to 40 Gbps speed. The cable is recommended when we play online or if we are managing downloads or streaming servers.

TechnoWikis will explain how we can define these priorities in macOS Mojave and thus determine which is the best network to use.

Prioritize WiFi or Ethernet by default in macOS

Step 1

To access the System Preferences panel we have the following options:
  • Using spotlight
  • By clicking on the icon located in the Dock
  • From the Apple menu by selecting "System Preferences."
Step 2

When accessing there we will see the following: image
Step 3

There we must click on the Network category and in the window that will be displayed we click on the pinion icon located at the bottom and select the option Set service order:

Step 4

Clicking there will display the following window where we see the available options: image
Step 5

To change the order of these, we simply have to drag the desired line to the location we deem necessary: image
Step 6

Click on the Ok button to apply the changes and in the Network panel we must click on the Apply button for the changes to have the expected effect: image

In this way it will be possible to establish the order of priority for the theme of the network between WiFi and Ethernet easily in macOS Mojave..
