Microsoft has officially presented the successor to the Windows 10 operating system. We have summarized the most important facts about the new Windows for you. This article explains how to get the new version and what requirements your computer must meet.

Windows 11: That changes with the new operating system

With the introduction of Windows 11, Microsoft recently made the step towards the new operating system available to the public. Contrary to the statement made by the company in 2014 that Windows 10 was the last major version of the operating system, the new OS was presented last Thursday. The new system will have a completely new look. Windows are shown with a semi-transparent design and rounded corners. The start menu has also been completely redesigned: Microsoft is saying goodbye to the "Live Tiles" with Windows 11 and is instead opting for a tidy menu with a clean look. According to the manufacturer, multitasking should have been improved, and handling multiple monitors should now work better. In addition, the system updates have been simplified and should require up to 40% less memory.

Windows 11 has been available to everyone since October 5, 2021. Further information on the launch of the new operating system can be found here.

Windows 11: Requirements for the upgrade

Users of Windows 10 computers should be able to simply download and install the new operating system after the release via upgrade - similar to the previous release of Windows 10, where most users could switch to the new Windows free of charge. The company did not initially name specific prices for full versions of Windows 11 for installation on computers without an operating system.

Compared to the previous version Windows 10, the system requirements for Windows 11 are much higher. Microsoft is committed to the following system requirements:

  • Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster with 2 or more cores on a compatible 64-bit processor or SoC (System on a Chip)
  • RAM: 4 gigabytes (GB)
  • Storage: 64 GB or larger storage device
  • System firmware: UEFI, enabled for safe start
  • TPM: Trusted Platform Module (TPM) version 2.0
  • Graphics card: Compatible with DirectX 12 or higher with WDDM 2.0 driver
  • Display: High-resolution display (720p) with a diagonal of more than 9 inches, 8 bits per color channel
  • Internet connection and Microsoft account

You can find out whether your current computer meets the requirements for Windows 11 on this Windows website. It is currently under construction, so it is possible that not all functions are available at the moment. At the bottom is a diagnostic tool that, if desired, reads the hardware of your current computer and then tells you whether your PC is suitable for Windows 11.
