The incognito mode in the browser has some advantages. The IP address is sometimes not tracked and the current history is not saved. But there are some disadvantages: Screenshots cannot be taken from the browser on the mobile phone in private mode. An opened page cannot simply be reopened via your timeline, because your visit to the page was not saved at all. Therefore it can be useful to deactivate the private mode.

What does "private browsing" or "incognito mode" mean?

When you are online, your activities are saved in the browser. This includes, for example, the pages accessed or cookies that have been accepted. However, if you have opened a private window for the browser, these activities are no longer saved in the browser. For example, no chronicle is then created. Note that bookmarks are always saved. This is how you can narrow down your tracks on the internet a little. But watch out: your internet provider or even your employer can still see which pages you have visited via the internet connection. How you can activate private surfing depends on the browser. Here you will find the instructions for the most common browsers:

  • Surf in private mode with Firefox
  • Incognito mode with Chrome
  • Safari: Activate "private surfing"

This is what a private window looks like in Firefox, for example.

How do I turn private mode off again?

The easiest way to deactivate private surfing in any browser is to close the browser window. Unfortunately, there is currently no way to simply switch off anonymous surfing in order to continue using the current window in normal mode. You can only save the page currently viewed in private mode as a bookmark and then open it again later in the normal window.

By the way: There is no way to completely prevent the incognito mode from opening. So you cannot simply switch the function off in principle.
