What is Google Hangouts?

Google Hangouts is a cloud-based messaging and video chat application developed by Google. It started as a feature of Google+ but became a standalone product in 2013 when features such as Google+ Messenger and Google Talk were integrated into the application. Google Hangouts is a unified communication service that enables members to initiate and participate in text, voice or video chats, either alone or in a group.

Google Hangouts can also be a useful and affordable collaboration platform for corporate customers. Hangouts also has an option called Google Hangouts on Air, which allows Google+ users to broadcast video calls live on YouTube. Hangouts on Air has established itself as a free way for companies to host online seminars and talk shows.

Google Hangouts replaces the previous chat functions in Google+ and Gmail as well as the standalone Google Talk app. Hangouts can also be integrated with Google Voice so that users of the service can make free national calls from their computing devices. Google replaced Hangouts with Google Chat in Gmail in 2020.

This is how you start a hangout on the desktop

You can easily use Google Hangouts in a browser on the desktop. Follow our step-by-step instructions or take a look at the brief instructions ..

1st step:

Open the website https://hangouts.google.com/ in a browser of your choice . If necessary, log in there with your Google account data. If you are signed in, click on " New Conversation " on the left .

2nd step:

Now look for the person with whom you want to start an entertainment by entering their name , e-mail address of the phone number entered. This only works if the other person also has a Google account.

3rd step:

Then click on the person to open the new conversation on the right.

How to start a hangout in the smartphone app

Google offers an app for Google Hangouts for both Android smartphones and iPhones. So you can easily use the service on your mobile phone in the app. Follow our step-by-step instructions or take a look at the brief instructions .

1st step:

Open the Hangouts app on your smartphone. Then tap the green plus at the bottom right .

2nd step:

Now select " New conversation ".

3rd step:

Look for your interlocutor here. You can do this by searching for the person's name , email address, or phone number . The only requirement: the chat partner must also have a Google account.

4th step:

Once you've found the person, just tap on them and the new chat window will open.

Quick start guide: Desktop

1. Open the website https://hangouts.google.com/ and log into your Google account. Then click on " New Conversation " on the left .
2. Now look for the person with whom you wish to speak, by their names , e-mail address of the phone number entered.
3. Then click on the person and the new conversation will open automatically.

Quick guide: smartphone app

1. Open Hangouts on your smartphone. At the bottom right, tap on the green plus and select " New conversation ".
2. Now look for your interlocutor. You can do this by searching for the person's name , email address, or phone number .
3. Then tap on the person to open a new chat window.
