Safari is Apple's in-house web browser, which is installed by default in macOS and iOS. Like other modern browsers such as Firefox and Google Chrome, Safari supports navigation with tabs or the automatic insertion of passwords. In addition to these basic functions, Safari also offers other options in the settings. We show you an overview here.

You can adjust these settings in Safari

After you have opened the settings via the menu bar " Safari "> " Settings ", you will find ten tabs with different options. So that you understand which options provide which setting, we give you a summarized overview below:

  • General

In the " General " tab you can set which page is displayed when a new window or tab is opened. You can also change the location for your downloads and change the Safari homepage here.
  • Tabs

The " Tabs " area allows you to set whether a tab should be opened instead of a window. You can also determine whether tabs should appear in the foreground or whether website icons should be displayed in tabs.
  • Auto-complete

In Safari, you can manage the auto-complete settings to automatically fill in contact information, usernames and passwords, credit card information, or other forms on web pages.
  • Passwords

In the " Passwords " tab you can view and edit the usernames and saved Safari passwords. This area is protected, so you must first unlock it using Touch ID or a password.
  • Search

In the " Search " area you can change your standard search engine. You can also customize the intelligent search field here to suit your needs.
  • Security

Use the " Security " tab to be warned of fraudulent content from Safari. You can also find the option "Activate JavaScript" or deactivate it here.
  • Data protection

In the " Data protection " area, you can prevent cross-website tracking, which is used to track your activities in Safari. You can use "Manage website data" to delete your cookies in Safari, among other things.
  • Websites

The " Websites " area includes all additional customizable settings such as the content blocker and the microphone. Here you can individually configure whether a website is allowed to have access to certain applications or not. An activated Flash player in Safari can also be managed for websites here.
  • Extensions

All extensions installed on the Mac are displayed in Safari here and can be adjusted. Read here how to find and install Safari add-ons.
  • Advanced

The advanced settings in Safari allow you to activate the accessibility features , to change the standard coding, to select style sheets or to display the " Developer " menu in the menu bar.
