The smartphone does so many tasks for us these days that most of us can no longer imagine a life without the smart phones. You can even turn your mobile device into a surveillance camera with third-party apps from the Google Play Store and Apple's App Store! We'll show you how to do that in this article.

How to use your smartphone as a surveillance camera

It is advisable to use an old cell phone that is otherwise no longer in use as a surveillance camera. Since you need two devices, your current device should then stream the video recorded by the mobile phone surveillance camera and control the functions. Corresponding apps for the functions mentioned are available for both iOS and Android. We have tested the "Alfred Camera" app for you on iOS, the app is also available for Android.

Follow our step-by-step instructions or take a look at the brief instructions .

1st step:

Open the " Alfred Camera " app on both devices - both the device that serves as the surveillance camera and the one that is used as the surveillance monitor. Log into the same account on both devices . Alternatively, you can also pair the devices using a QR code . Then select for the respective device in the highlighted button whether it is to be used as a display device or as a monitoring device.

2nd step:

Now tap on the live image . You are now streaming the video image from your surveillance device and you can also make further settings on this screen. The battery level of the monitoring device is also displayed.

3rd step:

You can control the monitoring device remotely in the lower menu bar . They have functions such as switching the photo light on and off, playing an alarm sound or switching between the front and main camera. You can also set whether and how video material is recorded when motion is detected in the image. Warning notices can also be sent to the display device if movement is detected in the image.

Brief instructions: Use your smartphone as a surveillance camera

Note: Connect both devices to the same WiFi network before using the app..

  1. Open the " Alfred Camera " app on both devices. Log into the same account on both devices or pair the devices using a QR code .
  2. On the device that you want to use as a surveillance camera, set the " Camera " mode in the menu bar at the top . Set the other device to " Display device ".
  3. If both smartphones are active, a connection is established automatically and the live image appears on the display device.
  4. Tap the live image to view the video and control the security camera. For example, you can use your smartphone to switch on the photo light of the other device, play an alarm sound or make settings for the automatic recording of video material.
