You can't get a song out of your head, but you don't know its name or the lyrics? Google now offers a new feature where you can just hum the melody and the search engine will give you the title. You can read how to use the function below.
Here's how to hum your catchy tune to Google
To use the new function on your smartphone, open the latest version of the Google app or the Google Assistant. From there, tap the microphone icon and say " What kind of song is that? ". Then start humming for 10 to 15 seconds .
After a song is hummed, Google's machine learning algorithm helps identify potential matches. You can then choose the best match and get information about the song and artist, watch all of the accompanying music videos, find the lyrics, read the analysis, or listen to the song through the streaming app of your choice..
How machines learn melodies
How does this new feature from Google work? Simply put: the melody of a song is like its fingerprint. Everyone has their own unique identity. Google has only developed machine learning models that can match your humming, whistling or singing to the correct "fingerprint".
So when you hum a melody in Google's search, the machine learning models convert the audio into a number-based sequence that represents the melody of the song. These models are trained to identify songs based on a variety of sources - including people singing, whistling, or humming, as well as studio recordings. The algorithms also remove all other details, such as accompanying instruments and the timbre and tone of the voice. What remains is the number-based sequence of the song, the so-called fingerprint. These sequences are then compared to thousands of songs from around the world and possible matches are identified in real time.
