There are two main ways to use Spotify on your PC. You can either install a desktop app or use the Spotify Web Player to access your music collection in a browser . Read on to find out how this works.

Stream music in your browser with the Spotify Web Player

The Spotify Web Player is built almost identically to the desktop app. You can create playlists and access the ones you have set up in the app. You can also browse the recommendations, search for specific artists and songs, and even switch to radio mode. In addition, you have access to all the contents of the Spotify catalog that you also have in the app.

You can access the Spotify web player through open.spotify.com . From there, log into your account and use Spotify as normal. Choose what you want to listen to, hit the play button , and you're good to go. Here is the list of supported browsers:

  • Chrome
  • Firefox
  • Edge
  • Opera
  • safari

Advantages and disadvantages of the Spotify Web Player

Benefits:

  • The ability to take your music with you. A big advantage of the web version is portability. With the Spotify desktop app, your music is limited to your device. In contrast, with a quick login to the Spotify web player, you can access your playlists anywhere.
  • Save space on your PC. If you want to waste as few gigabytes as possible, the web player makes more sense.
  • Block Ads: The free Spotify comes with visual and audio ads. As a user of a free Spotify account, you can use an ad blocker to block ads in the web player.

Disadvantage:

  • Audio files are streamed via the web player at a lower bit rate than via the desktop app. Free subscribers get 128kbps on the web player but 160kbps on the desktop app. Premium subscribers get 256kbps via the web player, but up to 320kbps via the desktop app.
  • The media playback controls on your computer or headphones do not work with the web player. So you cannot navigate there with the appropriate keyboard shortcuts.
  • If you are a Premium subscriber, you will not be able to download songs to listen to offline or access Spotify while offline. You need the app for this.

If you use your own computer, downloading the desktop app is probably a good idea. However, if you want to borrow a computer and listen to a few songs, then the Spotify Web Player is a great option..
