What is a CRDOWNLOAD file and why can not I open this file?

Google Chrome users may be familiar with the CRDOWNLOAD file. This file is created by the browser for partially downloaded files. CRDOWNLOAD files are created automatically when Chrome starts a download. They show that the download has not finished yet. When it finishes, the extension is removed from the file again.

The contents of the CRDOWNLOAD file are equivalent to the information that the Chrome web browser is receiving when downloading a file. Incomplete downloads are named according to the downloaded file by adding CRDOWNLOAD to the end. For example, example.mp4.crdownload. The CRDOWNLOAD files may remain on your desktop or in the download directory if the download has been interrupted for some reason and does not complete. The download must be restarted or resumed. If this is not possible, removing the CRDOWNLOAD extension from the file may allow you to partially play the file.
