The latest iPhones have been designed to meet the requirements of users around the world. It is in this concern to always satisfy its customers that the apple firm now offers the possibility of registering a second face in Face ID. Let's see how it works..
Why add a second face to Face ID
The facial recognition device of the iPhone received a lot of positive reviews from the trade press during its presentation. It has now become the benchmark in the field of security. The little test conducted by Forbes magazine using a 3D mask shows that Face ID remains one of the most reliable recognition systems on the market today.
But now nothing is perfect in this world. Even if Face ID is very successful with the general public, some users regret that it is only able to recognize one face. Fortunately, since the launch of iOS 12 this oversight is now corrected..
If you have an iPhone X or higher (i.e. with a TrueDepth front camera) you will be able to add a second user to Face ID. This will allow your spouse, close friend or family member, for example, to access your iPhone without having to enter the unlock code.
Create multiple face IDs on iOS
You can also use this feature to make a second capture of your face to be sure of being recognized in all circumstances. I am thinking in particular of people who are used to wearing accessories such as caps, hats or hats. These sometimes pose some problems when unlocking your phone..
- Open your iPhone settings
- Select the Face ID and code option
- Enter your security code
- Click on the Configure a second appearance section. Note that this option only appears if a face has been previously registered in Face ID
- Press the start button
- Then place your face or that of another individual under the iPhone screen
- Move the smartphone so that the camera can capture all angles of the face
- Once the capture is done you will see the continue button appear
- Click on it to finalize the configuration of the second face
Here, the second user can now unlock your iPhone without having to manually enter the code. To do this, he will just have to touch the phone screen to wake him up, place it in front of his face and then slide his finger from the bottom to the top of the screen.
Reset Face ID
But beware, unlike Touch ID (fingerprint unlocking system), the Face ID does not have any profile management tool. Concretely, this means that once the second face is registered, you will have no way to delete it.
To block access to this second user, you will have no other choice than to reset Face ID and therefore erase all Face ID face scans.
- Open your iPhone settings
- Click on Face ID and code
- Press the Reset Face ID button
The two faces are now removed from your iPhone as are the Face ID based app protectors. FYI, here's how to protect your WhatsApp conversations with Face ID. Now all you have to do is configure a new profile on Face ID.
