Step 1: clean the touchpad

First clean the touchpad. Use a dry and clean cloth to do this. Then drum your fingers on the touchpad for 10 seconds to remove any dust particles and crumbs.

Step 2: restart the Chromebook

Now restart the Chromebook:

  1. Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds, then release it.
  2. Wait for the Chromebook to completely shut down.
  3. Press the power button.

Step 3: check the settings

Navigate to the touchpad settings:

  1. Click the status box in the lower right corner.
  2. Click the Settings icon . This is a gear.
  3. Scroll down and click Touchpad .
  4. Make sure that the tap-to-click function is activated. This is the top option.

Optional: perform a hard reset
