Installation of teamviewer in ubuntu

One of the problems that has arisen in recent days has been the installation of TeamViewer remote access software on a computer with Ubuntu 16.10

Operation of teamviewer

Teamviewer is one of the most complete remote access programs between computersthat exist today, allows all types of connections between teams and is very comfortable for both remote work and to provide technical assistance to users among other options. It has many interesting features, such as a chat to communicate with the remote user, allows to transfer files between the source and destination computers, shows several monitors in case the remote computer has several monitors or active screens. The access is managed by means of an identifier that is generated at the time of installation and that is always the same for that equipment and a password that is generated at the moment of executing the program.

Take for example the case of the need to perform a computer technical assistance to a user remotely, without the need to travel to see the equipment, there are many solutions but one of the most comfortable is through team viewer, the procedure It would be the following:

  • The person in front of the remote computer installs the program on the remote machine.
  • The person in front of the remote computer provides the person in front of the source or local computer with the id provided by the team viewer and the password provided by the program for this program execution.
  • The person in front of the source computer, makes the connection and already has full control of the machine remotely.
  • When you finish performing the operation, the program connection ends.
  • If the program that is running on the remote machine does not close, the password would be the same and the connection could be made successfully again.
  • If it were closed, the access password would be a different one.

One of the interesting options provided by this remote access software is the ability to register on your website and thus generate a permanent access between computers by providing a password (provided that the software is on the remote computer running), in this way for example from the home computer we can access the work computer and vice versa for example, taking away the possibility of losing the password and not being able to access the other computer.

Installation of teamviewer in ubuntu

In the Windows operating system, I have never had a problem when performing an installation, but in ubuntu , when trying to install it, as indicated on its website:

  • Download the latest version for ubuntu in .deb format as indicated on its website .
  • Once downloaded, launch the installation with sudo dpkg -i <archivo.deb>

The problems that have been presented to me are the following:

When performing the installation with dpkg of the downloaded package the message that shows ubuntu is the following:

Unpacking teamviewer: i386 (11.0.67687) ...
dpkg: dependency problems prevent the configuration of teamviewer: i386:
 teamviewer: i386 depends on libpng12-0.

This problem is relatively serious, since the version of libpng that I have in my installed machine is version 16 and instead the installation tells me that it needs version 12.

I tried by all means to perform the installation in other ways, like trying to delete everything I had from team viewer on my machine with purge, to see if there was a broken package, but nothing, the apt-get purge does not do anything , I have tried to delete possible folders that I created in the installation attempt to avoid incorrect references but it remained the same:

rm -r ~ / .local / share / teamviewer11
rm -r ~ / .config / teamviewer
sudo rm -r / etc / teamviewer

Later, I changed my strategy and tried to install the libpng12 version, for that I searched for the package, I found it, downloaded it and installed it with dpkg

wget http://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu/pool/main/libp/libpng/libpng12-0_1.2.54-1ubuntu1_i386.deb

sudo dpkg -i /home/user/Downloads/libpng12-0_1.2.54-1ubuntu1_amd64.deb

It has not given any problem, I thought that if I would give problems to have installed the version of libpng16, but has not given problems.

Once I had this library installed I proceeded to try the installation of teamviewer again and then it was installed correctly:
