Data in Apple's iCloud is a practical thing. However, it is not always easy to get rid of them. But Apple doesn't have to know everything..

There is no cloud, there is only someone else's computer - this or something like that is what real IT freaks talk about the cloud. And it's actually true: when you save data in the cloud, you save it on someone else's computer or data center. Apple promises not to mess with the data. And that's why he's even got into a clinch with the FBI, which regularly complains about how difficult it is for law enforcement agencies to access iCloud data. But government inquiries about iCloud user data are increasing. That is why a little hygiene is called for. After all, data that no longer belong in the cloud no longer has to float around there.

Delete data from iCloud - here's how

Follow our step-by-step instructions or take a look at the brief instructions . Tip: Marking up lots of pictures at once can turn out to be a rather tedious task when you're on the iPhone or iPad. But instead of highlighting each file individually, all you have to do is tap and hold the first file. Then slide your finger over all of the files that you want to delete without stopping. If you swipe directly up or down, all images in this line will be marked automatically!

1st step:

To safely remove data from iCloud, you should do this directly in the browser on Apple's iCloud website ( www.icloud.com ). The cloud is the "center" of all your device storage: What you delete here directly disappears in any case from all Macs, iPads and iPhones . Log in with your Apple ID and the associated password. If you have set up 2-factor authentication, you must then enter the 6-digit code that Apple sends you on authorized devices.

2nd step:

Now select an entry in the iCloud interface, eg " Photos " or " iCloud Drive ". We have deleted data from " iCloud Driv e" as an example , but the process works the same for your photos .

3rd step:

Now click on the file, folder or photo that you want to delete. If you want to mark several files / folders / photos, hold down the [Ctrl] or [cmd] key.

4th step:

With a click on the trash can icon to remove the file or folder from the now iCloud storage. Warning: The iCloud system does not ask for any folders or files whether you want to delete. The situation is different with app folders: With these there is a security question that you have to confirm with " Delete ".

5th step:

Important: Apple's online iCloud storage does not have a recycle bin function. If the file or folder is deleted, it is really and permanently gone . The only way to get them back is to restore them from a Time Machine backup on a Mac !

6th step:

Now you should make sure that all your devices that are connected to the iCloud - PCs, Macs, smartphones and tablets - are also online . The data synchronization with the iCloud only works online and is triggered automatically. This will permanently delete the file, folder or photo on the devices as well. Of course, you can delete it from any device - but deleting it directly via iCloud.com is the most reliable method.

quick start Guide

  1. Go to www.icloud.com and sign in with your Apple ID .
  2. Now select an entry , e.g. B. "Photos" or "iCloud Drive" to delete data from it.
  3. Now select folders, files or photos with a click and then go to the trash can symbol in the top right. Your data will then be irrevocably deleted .
