The "Live View" function has been available in the Google Maps app since 2019. With the help of augmented reality (AR) you can use maps to navigate you: Instead of the map, you see the image of the road in front of you, on which arrows, instructions and information are displayed - reality is expanded, so to speak. This article shows you how to use Live View.

How to use Live View in Google Maps

Danger: Only use Live View on foot! Before moving around, put your device away. Otherwise you will be distracted and overlook risks in your environment.

Live View only works under certain conditions:

  • Your device must be compatible with ARKit or ARCore from Google.
  • Your surroundings must be captured with Google Street View. In our test, however, Live View also worked in an undetected environment.
  • The area should be well lit.

To use Live View on your smartphone or tablet, follow these step-by-step instructions or take a look at the quick start guide . The steps are the same for Android and iOS..

1st step:

Open the Google Maps app . Select a destination on the map or enter it in the search bar. Then go to the route planner (blue arrow).

2nd step:

Now select " On foot " at the top (pedestrian symbol).

3rd step:

Now you can select " Live View " at the bottom in the middle (framed location marker).

4th step:

Now follow the instructions that appear; click on " Next " in each case . The first time you use the function, you have to allow the app to access your camera. Then the app can recognize your surroundings based on buildings or signs, so point the camera at them.

5th step:

When the app has determined your location, arrows and other information will be shown in the image . Below you can see a section of the map from Maps.

6th step:

If you hold your smartphone or tablet horizontally , switch to the map view . If you hold it upright again, Live View appears again . Your device vibrates when you reach the next navigation step or your destination.

Note: Using Live View puts a heavy load on the battery.
